Into the DAW

A map of Ableton Live, and the ideas that apply in any DAW.

Ableton Live is a DAW, a digital audio workstation: a larger kind of program than an audio editor like Audacity. It records, edits, arranges, and mixes, and it plays instruments too. This reading maps what that means and the ideas that apply in any DAW.


What a DAW is

Live is a DAW, a digital audio workstation: one program that records, edits, arranges, and mixes sound, and plays instruments too. An audio editor like Audacity is something narrower: it opens a recording and changes the audio itself, cutting, trimming, fading, and leveling the waveform.

A DAW adds what an audio editor leaves out. It holds instruments you play and trigger. It works with MIDI, the note data covered below. It mixes through a built-in console laid out like the Toft desk, with faders, sends, groups, and a master. Recording, editing, instruments, and mixing share one window. You load your sample library and make pieces from those recordings.


A short history

The DAW is the newest tool in a long line for capturing sound and reshaping it after the fact. Recording itself is over a century old, but for most of that time a recording was fixed: once it was made, changing it was hard. The story of the DAW is the story of recordings becoming editable.

That story runs through magnetic tape. From the 1940s, studios recorded sound onto tape, and for the first time a recording could be cut apart and rearranged. Composers spliced tape with a razor blade, joining pieces of different recordings into something new. Musique concrète was made this way, by hand, one cut at a time.

In the 1950s the guitarist Les Paul helped develop multitrack tape, machines that held several recordings side by side so parts could be layered and balanced. A band no longer had to play all at once: a take could be built up piece by piece. Multitrack recording is still the heart of how a studio works, and it is what the tracks in Live descend from.

Tape had one hard limit. Editing it was physical, so it was permanent. A cut was a cut, with no undo, and a mistake could cost you the take. The move into digital is in large part the move past that limit.

By the late 1970s, the first systems recorded sound as digital data, as numbers a computer could store. Once sound was numbers, it could be drawn on a screen as a waveform, edited with a cursor, and copied without wearing out. The work that took a razor blade became a selection and a keystroke. The same shift reached instruments: the Fairlight CMI, an Australian machine from 1979, was one of the first digital samplers, able to record a sound and play it back across a keyboard, the move that defines sampling.

Computers also learned the other half of music: the performance. In 1983 the MIDI standard gave instruments and computers a shared language for notes, so a computer could capture which keys you played and send them back out to a synthesizer. The programs that did this were called sequencers, and they grew into the software we use now.

The two halves came together. In 1989 and 1991, Digidesign's Sound Tools and then Pro Tools recorded many tracks straight to a computer's hard disk, and through the 1990s the studio that had been a room full of tape machines became software. In 1996, Steinberg's VST let software effects run inside the program, using the computer's own power to shape sound as it played, and software instruments followed by the end of the decade. A laptop could now hold the whole studio: the recorder, the mixer, the effects, and the instruments.

Ableton Live arrived in 2001, made by a small company in Berlin for musicians who wanted to perform with a computer on stage as well as record in a studio. That origin shaped the program: it is why it is called Live, why it has a grid for launching loops on the fly (the Session View), and why it can stretch a recording to match a tempo on the spot (warping). You meet both in Live.


What changes once you are inside a DAW

Nondestructive editing

In an audio editor like Audacity, an edit changed the file. Cut a second of sound and that second was gone from the recording on disk. That is why careful copies matter: a wrong move is permanent.

Live works the other way. When you cut, trim, fade, or move sound in Live, you are not editing the file. You are editing a clip. A clip is a reference to an audio file: it points at the file on disk and carries a set of instructions for how to play it, where to start, where to stop, how loud, where to fade. The file itself stays whole. Change the instructions and the file underneath does not move.

This is nondestructive editing. Because the file never changes, an edit you dislike is undone by changing the instruction back, not by restoring a backup. The original recordings stay in the Set's project folder untouched; the Set stores only the list of clips and their instructions.

Live processing

The same idea runs through effects. In an audio editor like Audacity, applying an effect like a fade or an equalizer rewrote the samples in the file. In Live, an effect sits on the track and does its work while the music plays. Press play and Live carries out the effect in real time, building the processed sound on the spot. This is live processing, and it runs on the computer's own power, the shift VST brought in 1996, rather than on a rack of outboard hardware.

Because the processing happens during playback, an effect is a setting you can change or switch off at any time, and the recording underneath never changes. You can stack an equalizer, a compressor, and a reverb on a track, adjust them while you listen, and turn any of them off to hear the track without it. Nothing is committed until you export a finished file at the end.

MIDI

Live holds two kinds of material. One is audio: recorded sound, the kind you edit and capture. The other is new, and it is called MIDI.

MIDI is data, not sound. It is a small instruction that says which pitch to play, when to play it, and how hard, a value called velocity. On its own it makes no sound at all. To hear anything, the note has to trigger an instrument, and the instrument is what produces the audio.

The difference between audio and MIDI is the difference between a recording of a performance and the instructions for one. To make audio, a person plays an instrument, the sound moves through the air, and a microphone captures it. To make sound from MIDI, the data takes the performer's place: it tells an instrument inside Live which notes to play, and the instrument generates the sound. One captures a sound that already happened. The other holds the decisions and makes the sound on demand.

Because MIDI is only the decisions, you can change them afterward with nothing lost. Move a note to another pitch, shift its timing, play it harder or softer, or swap the instrument entirely, and the part plays back the new way. A wrong note is not a ruined take. It is one note to drag.

With MIDI you play the samples in your own library. A note triggers a sound from your collection, and the same note moved higher or lower plays that sound higher or lower. Live keeps audio and MIDI side by side, and MIDI is the trigger, not the sound.


The concepts apply elsewhere

You are learning Live, but you are really learning how a DAW works. The names and the layout change from one program to the next; the concepts underneath do not.

Tracks, clips, nondestructive editing, a timeline, a mixer with faders and sends, an equalizer, a compressor, a reverb: every serious DAW has these, because they are properties of digital audio and of how production works, not features unique to Ableton. Learn them once and you can sit down at an unfamiliar program and find your footing by looking for the same parts under different labels.

Sampling and MIDI as a trigger

Turn your library into instruments. A MIDI note triggers an instrument, and the instrument plays a sound from your collection. Simpler plays one sample across the keyboard. A Drum Rack is a grid of pads, each pad holding one sound.

Mixing in Ableton

Mix a small session with Live's built-in tools. The mixer is the Toft console rebuilt in software: track faders, pan, sends to a shared effect, group tracks, and a master. The equalizer and compressor return here as Live devices.

A useful starting set of those effects falls into two roles. The equalizer, compressor, and reverb you likely know already; the rest are worth meeting as you mix.

Work at 48 kHz whenever you can: files at that rate import into a Live Set with nothing to convert. Export finished work at 32-bit where the hardware supports it; 24-bit is fine too, the difference is small. The rate that matters for a deliverable is set when you export.
