Treating sound as raw material, something to cut, shape, layer, and arrange rather than perform live or notate on a staff, is one of the central ideas of recorded music. It runs from musique concrète through field recording and the mixing desk to sampling, and the pieces gathered here are landmarks along that line. Listen with the editing, recording, and sampling vocabulary in mind.
Musique concrète was started in Paris in 1948 by Pierre Schaeffer, who recorded everyday sounds (trains, doors, voices, water) and worked with them as raw material, the way a sculptor works with stone. The composers who started it were working decades before digital audio existed. Schaeffer's Études de bruits (1948), the first works in the genre, were cut directly to acetate disc, since usable magnetic tape recorders weren't yet widely available in France. By the early 1950s tape had taken over, and for the next thirty years, this tradition was a tape tradition.
Composers built their pieces by physically splicing pieces of magnetic tape with razor blades, looping them, slowing them down or speeding them up, playing them backward. The "edit" wasn't a click in software: it was a cut with a blade, a piece of adhesive splicing tape, and a careful placement on a metal block.
This matters for how you listen. The artifacts you might hear, things like surface noise, slight pitch instability, the audible seam of an edit, are not flaws in the recording. They're the sound of the medium itself, the physical reality of working with magnetic tape and disc. Schaeffer and Henry weren't trying to sound digital and failing. They were working in their actual material, the way a sculptor works in marble rather than aspiring to be a 3D printer.
Digital audio took a long time to arrive in this tradition. Computer-based music synthesis began in research labs as early as the 1950s, but the equipment was expensive and limited. Tape stayed dominant through the 1970s. The first commercial digital samplers arrived around 1979, but they cost as much as a house. Through the 1980s and into the early 1990s, studios began mixing tape and digital workflows. Hard-disk recording gradually became affordable. By the late 1990s, anyone with a personal computer and a little software could do digitally what had previously required a tape studio. Within another decade, working in tape became a deliberate aesthetic choice rather than a default.
Knowing the medium tells you how to listen. The pieces below were physical objects: lengths of tape, with cuts in them, played on machines. They sound the way they sound for reasons that include the medium. Hold that in your ears, and listen with the ears of someone about to make a piece in the same tradition.

Turning sound into a stored file is full of choices: which microphone, where to point it, what to keep, how to mix it. None of them is neutral, and together they are the composition. This part has two halves. In the first, recording is the composition: artists who make the act of capturing sound the whole work. In the second, mixing is the composition: one handful of sounds bent into three different records at the desk. In both, listen for the same thing: how much the person behind the recording lets you see them.
Before you ever reach a mixing desk, you have already made choices that shape the result. Where do you point the microphone? What do you record, and what do you leave out? When do you press stop? A field recordist works with the world as it is and turns the act of recording into the composition itself.
The three pieces below are all built from recorded sound, with no instruments played and no notes written. What changes from one to the next is how much of the person holding the microphone you can sense. At one end, the recordist works to vanish, handing you a place and stepping out of the way. At the other end, the recordist is right there in the piece, telling you where to listen.
This is the same question you will face the first time you record a sound for your own library: do you try to capture it as it is, or do you start shaping it the moment you choose where to stand?
Where a recording sits on this spectrum tells you what to listen for. In the first, listen to the place and notice how little points back to a person. In the second, follow the journey and ask what was chosen and in what order. In the third, listen to how the recordist moves your attention from one sound to the next.
López recorded the rainforest at a biological station in Costa Rica across two rainy seasons, then edited the recordings into one unbroken cycle of a day. He calls his approach "profound listening": he strips away narration and labels so that you are left alone with the place itself.
Listen for: the rainforest as one thick, shifting texture, with layers of insects, frogs, water, and rain and no clear front or back. It never settles into a melody or a beat; a sound rises, holds, and gives way to the next, with no one announcing it. The piece runs about seventy minutes, so listen to a stretch of ten with your eyes closed and let the place arrive.

The line no longer runs. He edited the recordings into a coast-to-coast journey that now exists only as this record, with no narrator: the composition is in what he kept and the order he put it in. This leg, El Divisadero, rides through the Copper Canyon.
Listen for: the rhythm of the rails working like a pulse under everything; the train as a presence that arrives, passes, and fades; the landscape opening around it; and the sense of a real journey held in a recording by one person's choices about what to keep.

She filters the city away and lifts up the tiny sounds of barnacles feeding at the waterline, sounds your ear would skip right over. A microphone hears everything at once, differently from the way we listen, and she composes with that difference.
Listen for: her voice guiding your attention from one sound to the next; the moment the city is pushed back and the small clicking barnacle sounds come forward; and how completely she decides what you hear and when. The recordist is fully inside this one.

Hand them to three different engineers and you can get three records that share almost nothing. The difference is not the sounds. It is what the mixing decides to do with them.
At one end of the spectrum, the engineer works to disappear. The goal is to capture a real performance in a real room as faithfully as possible: the players, the space between them, the air around them. A few well-placed mics, light intervention, and the recording stands in for being in the room. You judge this kind of mixing by how little you notice it.
In the middle, the studio builds something that never happened in any single room. Parts are recorded separately and stacked, instrument on instrument, until they fuse into one wall of sound. Phil Spector called his results "little symphonies for the kids." No group ever performed the finished record live; it exists only as a recording. The mixing is doing an enormous amount of work, and that work goes toward making the construction sound like one convincing whole.
At the far end, the mixing is the composition. In early-1970s Jamaica, engineers like King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry took finished multitrack tapes and reworked them live at the desk: dropping the vocal out entirely, pushing the drums and bass to the front, sending a single snare hit into a long echo, sweeping a filter until a part dissolved. Before them, a mixing desk balanced levels toward a clean final mix. They played the desk like an instrument, and the engineer stepped to the front of the record instead of standing behind it. This is the birth of dub, and it is the reason a producer today reaches for delay and reverb as creative tools rather than corrections.
Where a record sits on this spectrum tells you what to listen for. In the first, listen past the music to the room. In the second, try to count the layers, and notice that they could never share one stage. In the third, follow the engineer's hands. As you listen, hold onto one fact: you are now the person making these decisions. Every sample you record, and every choice you make about it, sits somewhere on this same line.
Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, a small New York jazz club, on a single Sunday in June 1961: piano, bass, and drums, three players listening hard to each other. The engineer's job here is to vanish. Almost nothing stands between the performance and you.
Listen for: the natural echo of a small club, with an audience close enough to hear in the quiet moments; piano, bass, and drums each sitting in their own spot, left to right, the way they stood on the stage; and the natural swings in volume, where a passage that drops to almost nothing is left to stay that quiet.
Listen on YouTube: Bill Evans Trio, Gloria's Step (live, 1961)Phil Spector's most famous production, cut at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. Spector recorded a small orchestra of session players and layered them, drenched in echo, into a single massive sound. He built it instrument by instrument, with the drums added last. The result is far too large and too reverberant to have come from any one room, yet it arrives as one record.
Listen for: the drum pattern that opens the song, one of the most copied openings in pop; how hard it is to pick out any single instrument, since the whole point is to blend them into one mass of sound; and the echo washing over everything, all of it coming from a single point with no left-or-right spread (mono), a sharp contrast with the way the Evans trio spreads across the stage.
Listen on YouTube: The Ronettes, Be My Baby (1963)A dub version of a reggae song, "Baby I Love You So." King Tubby took the finished multitrack tape and remixed it live at his desk, turning the song into something new. The engineer is making moves in real time: this is the mix as a performance.
Listen for: the drops, where the whole band cuts out and then slams back in; a single drum hit or word spinning off into long repeats, which is an aux send feeding an echo, the same routing you saw on the desk; and the drums and bass held up front while the melodica (the breathy, harmonica-like instrument carrying the tune) and bits of the vocal drift in and out around them.

It is the same idea as musique concrète, where Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry built pieces from train sounds and a creaking door using tape and razor blades. The artists here do it with turntables, samplers, and the computer.
Musique concrète ended in the tape era. Schaeffer and Henry worked by cutting magnetic tape with a blade and splicing it back together, so building music from recorded sound meant physical labor with tape, a knife, and glue. What changed after them was the tool, not the idea.
The first new tool was the turntable, also called the record player. A turntable spins a vinyl record on a flat platter while a needle rides the groove and reads the sound back. On its own, it just plays a record. In the Bronx in the 1970s, DJs turned it into an instrument, and that is where hip-hop began. They set two turntables side by side, ran both into a small mixer, and put the same record on each one. When the few seconds of drums they wanted ran out on the first copy, they dropped the needle on the second copy and played those seconds again, looping that fragment for as long as they liked. They learned to spin the record back by hand to scratch it, and to cut between the two turntables in time. The record stopped being something you listen to and became raw material you perform with.
Grandmaster Flash's 1981 piece is a recording of exactly this, one continuous live performance built entirely from other people's records, mixed on three turntables (one more than the usual two) in real time. Nothing in it was played on an instrument. Every sound in it was already on a record before he started.
The next tool put the same idea inside a machine. A sampler records short pieces of sound into its memory, then plays them back when you press a pad or a key. The sampler that defined hip-hop was the Akai MPC, a box with a grid of soft rubber pads across the front.
Each pad holds a sound. You could take a two-second snatch of an old record, load it into the MPC, spread slices of it across the pads, and then play a whole new rhythm by tapping them with your fingers. Cutting a sample into pieces like this is called chopping. DJ Shadow built an entire album, Endtroducing....., on an MPC using nothing but samples from vinyl, and it holds the Guinness record as the first album made completely from samples. J Dilla chopped soul and funk records into rhythms so distinctive that producers still study them today, much of his last album made on a small sampler called the SP-303 and a stack of 45s. If the MPC looks familiar, it should: Simpler and the Drum Rack in Ableton are its direct descendants. The pads moved onto your screen, and the idea came with them.
The computer absorbed all of it. The Avalanches built Since I Left You from thousands of vinyl samples, stitched so smoothly that the seams disappear, work that would have taken a tape studio years. By the time you were born, anyone with a laptop could chop and layer recorded sound the way these artists did with racks of gear. You are doing it now in Ableton.
As you listen, you are hearing your own toolkit at work a few decades back. Notice what each artist does with their source material: where they loop it, chop it, pitch it, and layer it.

Use headphones if you can, and listen to each piece all the way through at least once before moving on. Many of these recordings ask for your attention rather than playing in the background; if a piece feels strange or boring at first, sit with it. The more you listen, the more separate decisions and samples you start to pick out underneath the surface.
